Team Teachers Tour: Page Links

teamteachers:

image

You may have noticed some links at the top of the Team Teachers blog (they’re dark right now because our theme knows it’s nighttime on the East Coast). These links exist to give you quick access to resources we’re developing for you. Here’s a breakdown:

New to Tumblr?

Here’s a quick introduction to the education community for those of you new to Tumblr. In the future this will contain a “Quick Start Guide” that you can share with your colleagues so they can set themselves up on Tumblr. At the moment, it specifically deals with the Tumblr Teacher Roll Call, and the Education tag. Speaking of which…

The Education Tag

This is the one of the central locations for educators on Tumblr. Any post tagged “Education” will appear here. This is one of the few tracked tags on Tumblr, and one of the Top 30 tags on Tumblr overall. It is curated by a set of editors from the Education community.

Education Resources

Future community-driven projects and free online resources will be linked to here. Two of the most successful projects are currently currently listed on this page. They include the Tumblr Teacher Roll Call (linked above) and a List of Interview Questions for those of you who are job-hunting.

Teaching Tags

We feel strongly that tags will have a huge impact on your ability to find content from other Tumblr bloggers that matches your grade level, discipline, or interest. This page currently lists the most popular education tags on Tumblr. In the future, we’ll be working with all of you to develop new tags for each discipline and grade level. Have a suggestion for an education tag? Submit it here.

Teacher Dare Day Rules

Teacher Dare Day is the brainchild of positivelypersistentteach, and is essentially the Tumblr education community’s version of an #edchat on Twitter. It’s a great way to interact with other educators on Tumblr. The rules are simple, and can be found here. Remember: If you are participating in a Teacher Dare Day, tag your posts “Teacher Dare Day.”

There will certainly be more to come, but this is a great start.

What do you think? Did we miss anything?

How to Find that Old Post on Your Tumblr Blog

“It was that post about that one thing that I shared back in March. Or maybe September? ARGH!”

The trouble with Tumblr blogs is that they’re not easily searchable. Sure, you can use tags to navigate around. But tags on Tumblr encourage you to look at things that are being posted now, not several months ago. This is especially problematic for those of you who post educational things to your blogs to “save them for later.” But if you want some real help tracking down that old post you’re looking for, you can actually just Google it.

Tumblr blogs are public by default, so your blog has likely been indexed by Google. To perform a search of just your blog, type this into Google:

site:YOURBLOG.tumblr.com

Add a space, then type whatever you’re looking for. It’s that simple, and the results will be exclusively from your blog.

Here’s a sample Google search for posts on my blog about pedagogy: https://www.google.com/search?q=site%3Aworld-shaker.tumblr.com+pedagogy

On a sidenote, this also works for any website that has been indexed by Google, which is a helpful research strategy if you’re having trouble finding content on a specific site.

Protip: Make judicious use of tags in all your posts to make it as easy as possible to find what you’re looking for down the road.

Tomorrow, Wednesday August 1, will be Teacher Truth or Dare Day.

Truths will operate as usual dare day.   Here are the rules.

Dares: You may put requests in people’s asks.  For example, I dare Pablo to build a fort with his wife in their new house.  You have the right to not do a dare without any peer pressure.  For example, I will not post a picture of how messy my room is right now.

Get on it.

Train Wreck - No Pictures, Please: First day(s)!

jbizzle329:

I’m sitting at my desk at work with Ludacris blaring out of my work computer.  The school is empty.  The principal let me stay late to do a bit of work.  I’ve done all I can do so I’m gonna tell you about my first day(s).

Yesterday was great.  I met my co-workers, worked in groups and got some work done in my classroom.  While working in my classroom (I share with 2 other special ed teachers), I slowly realized that the teacher who was fired left the biggest mess he could.  Yesterday and today has been filled with sifting through what I think I will need and what can be tossed.  There doesn’t seem to be a system to data collection, student portfolios, or use for half the materials in the classroom.  I ended up having to leave early yesterday to go to Target to organize the materials I did have.

Upon leaving yesterday, my principal stopped me and asked me to describe my progress monitoring binder.  When I finished, he asked me to have one ready for our special ed meeting on Friday.  WHAT?!  He wants me to have something done that I would normally do in another week when the classroom is settled and routines are in place.  With this new request, I went to Target then straight to Starbucks to start mapping out and preparing this binder.  I got home at 9 pm.  What a great 14 hour first day!  My room still looks like a train wreck!

Today we had a mystery field trip.  We boarded a school bus and went downtown to a place called Work Spring.  It’s basically a really modern conference hall.  We learned about technology and it’s uses in education and then we had a faculty challenge of creating a curriculum around Joy.  It’s not meant for out students but for the staff.  Each group had to look at different parts of Joy. Theory, Aesthetics, Psychology, Social networking…there were 2 more but I can’t remember them.  We HAD to integrate technology into our “lesson”.  I could barely contain myself.  We were given the topic of Aesthetics.  Immediately my group began brainstorming and I was making all these connections to how we could use this in a Tumblr community with my school.  I presented them with the idea of creating a blog where we ask questions about joy, post assignments, and facilitate discussions and link them to google docs.  We even created our own tag!  They loved it.  By the end of it, we had created a small Tumblr community that had videos, posts, and discussions that centered around Joy.  It was amazing!

When we got back to school I worked on the binder and presented the rough draft to my principal.  He loved it!  He then said how happy he was to have me at this school.  He was excited about what I could bring to the special ed department and my knowledge about integrating technology not only with staff, but with parents and students. ::huge grin::

Tomorrow we get new furniture in our room.  I’ll come in Saturday and/or Sunday to finish setting up.  Pictures will be posted when it’s finished.

I can’t believe the year is starting!  So far so good!

Now it’s time to DO WORK at the gym.  I’ve exhausted my mind, it’s now time to exhaust my body.

P to the S: if you have any questions about the PD, feel free to send them to my ask box!

WARNING to anyone who is trying to hide their Tumblr blog or real-world identity

This feature existed before, but it’s now been made more prominent.

This is particularly important to educators. If your students know the email address you use to log into Tumblr (even if they don’t know you’re on Tumblr), and they’ve added you as a contact in their Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail, AOL, or MSN accounts, they can theoretically find you by clicking on the Add and remove button under the number of followers…

…then attempting to connect with their contacts on the following page:

I know some of you are job-hunting, or live in “witch hunt” districts and want to keep the contents of your blog private and unattached to you in real life. If you don’t want to show up when someone searches for people they know, go to the Preferences page (the gear icon in the top-right corner), and uncheck the box beneath your name.

On a sidenote, love to Tumblr for giving you the option to not be found this way instead of Facebooking you about it.
